How to Prepare for Your First Recording Session

June 20266 min read

Your first professional recording session is a milestone. You have saved up, booked the studio, and now the date is coming. The difference between a great session and a frustrating one almost always comes down to preparation. Here is exactly what to do before you walk through the door at CW Soundlab.

Know Your Lyrics Cold

This sounds obvious, but it is the single most common reason sessions run over time. If you are looking at your phone between every take to check the next line, you are not in the zone and you are burning expensive studio time. Print your lyrics out or have them on a device you can prop up in the booth. Know the song well enough that you can recite it without looking.

Record a voice memo of yourself rapping or singing the song the night before. Play it back and listen critically. You will hear things you cannot hear while you are performing.

Have Your Beat Ready Before You Arrive

If you are bringing your own beat, have it on a USB drive and send it to the studio via email ahead of time. Make sure it is a high quality WAV file, not an MP3. If you are a Soundlab Member at CW Soundlab, you receive a free WAV lease beat each month that is ready to record over. Using a high quality beat file makes a real difference in the final product.

Warm Up Your Voice

You would not run a race without stretching. Do not walk into the booth cold. Spend 10 to 15 minutes before your session warming up. Hum scales, do lip trills, or do light vocal exercises. Your voice will open up faster and you will get cleaner takes from the first try.

Hydrate Properly

Drink water consistently throughout the day before your session. Avoid dairy products before you record because they coat your throat and affect your vocal clarity. Avoid alcohol before recording. Avoid iced drinks immediately before getting in the booth. Room temperature water is your best friend.

Bring Reference Tracks

A reference track is a professionally mixed and mastered song that represents the sound you are going for. It gives the engineer a target. Save two or three songs to your phone that represent the vibe, energy, and sonic quality you want. When you play these for Wizz at CW Soundlab, it cuts the guesswork and gets your mix in the right direction faster.

Plan Your Session Time

Know in advance what you want to accomplish. Are you recording one song from scratch? Two verses for a collaboration? Fixing specific parts of a track you started somewhere else? Go in with a clear plan and share it with your engineer at the start of the session. This lets everyone work toward the same goal.
